Chit Chats Insurance protects your shipments for up to 86% cheaper than other insurance providers. While most carrier insurance offers base coverage of $100, Chit Chats Insurance allows you to insure shipments of higher value.

If you are shipping high value items we strongly recommend adding Chit Chats Insurance as this will allow you to minimize any potential loss should something unexpected occur.

How does it work?

If you purchase Chit Chats Insurance for your eligible shipments, they are insured from the time Chit Chats receives them and hands off to the carrier until delivery to your recipient. Chit Chats Insurance will provide coverage for any loss or damage to your shipments during this entire time. Unlike carrier insurance Chit Chats Insurance covers shipments from the moment we receive your shipment.

Since delivery estimates are not guaranteed, Chit Chats insurance cannot be used to receive reimbursement for the late delivery of a shipment.

Coverage of your shipment applies while the shipment is returned to sender. However, this does not apply to Chit Chats International Tracked postage as this postage does not have a return service.

Important: Your shipments must be received by Chit Chats (i.e. via scan) in order to be covered by Chit Chats Insurance. Shipments are not covered while they are in transit to Chit Chats. If you are shipping high value items, we encourage you to research additional insurance coverage to cover your shipments while they are in transit to Chit Chats. You must confirm the coverage rules for any supplemental coverage you purchase through another provider.

Cost of Chit Chats Insurance

Chit Chats Insurance is calculated based on the insurable value of your shipment in increments of $100 (with the exception of Chit Chats Slim shipments). Two factors determine the insurable value:

The insurable value of the shipment is calculated at the time of postage purchase and is reported to the insurer in USD.

If the insurable value of the shipment is greater than $100, additional coverage is available for each additional $100 USD (or part thereof) with the cost of insurance as displayed in the table below. Insurance is not charged tax.

The maximum insurable value for Chit Chats Insurance depends on the service used:

  • $50 USD for Chit Chats Slim & U.S. Slim shipments

  • $300 USD for shipments sent internationally

  • $800 USD for tracked Canadian and U.S. bound shipments

Shipments with retail values exceeding these maximums will only have partial coverage up to the maximum amount. E.g. An International shipment with a retail value of $700 USD is eligible for insurance coverage of $300 USD. This is the total insured amount of the shipment.

What is not insurable?

Certain items are difficult to insure, like items that are fragile, irreplaceable, or of high value. Often insurance providers will opt to not cover shipments containing these items. The following groups are widely considered to be uninsurable:

  • Computer Chips

  • Currency/Money/Bills, Gift Certificates

  • Personal Goods including gifts and items not sold to a customer

  • Perishables and items having a shelf-life of less than 3 years

  • Precious/Semi-Precious Stones, Bullion

  • Deeds/Evidence of debt/Notes, Securities, 

  • Furs

  • Televisions

  • Tickets

  • Laptop computers

  • Cellphones

Chit Chats Insurance is not available for shipments that are "Gift" or "Returned Good" content type.

Insurable Value

Insurance coverage has a maximum value, which varies based on the type of service and the destination. Full tracked shipments bound for Canada and the U.S. are insured up to $800 USD. The only partially tracked services that can be insured are Chit Chats Slim and Chit Chats U.S. Slim, for up to $50 USD. International shipments have coverage up to $300 USD.

If the value of the contents exceeds the maximum insurable amount and you file a claim, you will only receive the insured amount. For example, if you have a Chit Chats International Tracked package valued at $330 USD and postage was at $20 USD, the insurable value is $350 USD; however, our insurance provider covers only up to $300 USD for this service. Therefore, you would only be reimbursed $300 USD.

Your shipment may also have carrier insurance, which depends on the type of postage used. However, you must handle this independently, as it is not managed by Chit Chats.

Please be advised that all values are reimbursed in US dollars by our provider. 

Insurable Destinations

Insurance providers may assess specific countries as having a higher risk of loss or damage. Often these countries are not covered by the insurer and are considered to be uninsurable. 

Please see our coverage rules for the most current list of countries excluded from insurance coverage.

Note: Make sure to correctly enter the destination country—otherwise, available rates may not appear. For example, if you're shipping to Puerto Rico and select Puerto Rico as the destination country, no rates will be shown. Since Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, you must select the United States as the destination country to view applicable rates.

Insurable Postage Types

Currently, only fully-tracked postage options purchased on the Chit Chats platform are eligible for Chit Chats Insurance with the exception of our partially tracked Chit Chats Slim and Chit Chats U.S. Slim postage. In other words, all fully-tracked services along with Chit Chats Slim and U.S. Slim are eligible for Chit Chats Insurance. Coverage does not extend to postage purchased outside of the Chit Chats platform.

Apart from Chit Chats Slim and Chit Chats U.S. Slim, services lacking delivery confirmation such as partially tracked or non-tracked services are not insurable with Chit Chats Insurance but may include carrier insurance. Chit Chats Insurance cannot be added to the following platform postage types:

  • USPS First Class Mail (Letter & Oversized Flat)

  • USPS Priority Mail (Flat envelope & letter package type)

Please also note that since return service is not provided for Chit Chats International Tracked, claims for the loss or damage may not be filed for shipments marked for return to sender via tracking updates.

Important! In order to be eligible to file a claim for your insured shipment, it must first be received by Chit Chats. Shipments are not covered while they are in transit to be dropped off at a Chit Chats. You cannot file claims for shipments that have been disposed of due to items being prohibited or returned to sender. If your lost package is located during the processing of your claim, it may be denied by the insurer.  See timelines for filing claims.

Loss or non-delivery

Shipments that are deemed lost in transit are covered by Chit Chats Insurance. Shipments that are delayed but still in transit, are generally not considered lost and a claim may be denied. You may be required to provide proof of non-receipt from your customer when filing a claim for loss e.g. proof that a delivery error occurred. For most approved claims, the insured value will be offered for reimbursement. Any dispute of a denied claim should be sent to info@cabrella.com. 

Damage

Shipments damaged during transit are covered by Chit Chats Insurance. You may be required to provide pictures of the shipment and its contents when filing an insurance claim for damage. Typically, the reimbursement for a damage claim will include only the declared retail value of the shipment contents.

Claims for Chit Chats Insurance do not offer coverage for handling or insurance fees. For the full terms and conditions of Chit Chats Insurance coverage, please see our insurer’s coverage rules.

Refunds

Refunds are automatically credited back to your account when a refund is requested before dropping off your shipment at a Chit Chats location. However, the shipment will no longer be eligible for an insurance refund if any of the following apply:

  • The shipment was purchased 30 days or more before the refund request

  • The shipment is not in a “Ready” status
